At the same time, researchers are investigating new methods of preserving and renewing bridges, so that existing structures will last longer and provide greater service and fewer new structures will have to be built in the future.

Appendix B:
Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge
The Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge, connecting Kobe on the mainland with Awaji on Awaji Island, is a huge three-span cable-stayed bridge some 3910 meters in total length with a center span of 1990 meters. Now completed, it is the longest bridge of its type in the world, surpassing the Humber Bridge in the U.K. which has a center span of 1410 meters. The Bridge was constructed by Matsuo Bridge Co. who is responsible for building some of the greatest bridges on Earth, including the Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge.
