The movie Brian’s song has two main characters. Those two persons are professional football players for the National Football League team Chicago Bears. Their names are Brian Piccolo, according whose song the movie is named and his opponent Gale Sayers They both are coming to the Bears football team in the year 1965 like quarterbacks and it cause them a lot of struggle.
Those two characters are telling whole story. The first one is Brian Piccolo, the white quarterback, who comes from the Forest Lake College. He is a great player, but he has ever had bad luck, because every time there have been someone better and he had to be number two. Second person is Gale Sayers, also quarterback, who is supposedly better player and he gets better position than Brian. This situation is unique, because they both are quarterbacks and they both have to share the room. It won’t be such a huge problem, but their races complicate the situation. Brian is a white guy and Gale is black, they are supposed to share their room. This gives a unique situation, because there have never been black and white player rooming together in the history of National Football League.
This movie shows us also many positive aspects of sport. Those two players are building a strong relationship together, which sport usually does. Another aspect is the support from each other. In the movie Gale broke his leg and he received huge support from Brian and he didn’t even have to ask for it. One more aspect is that sport made them acceptable to their position. When Gale is on the top Brian suffers, but he learns how to handle it and also, when Gale is injured, than he is cheering for Brian.
This movie also shows a lot of social issues taking place at this point of time. In the year 1965 the discrimination of African Americans was much bigger than it is right now. Even today there is a lot of incidents appearing. Brian and Gale could get through this problem, which sets really good example. Another problem in the movie was the handling of the competition between the football players. Two main opponents were able to become the closest friends. Another issue shown by the movie was the fact of Brian’s disease.
