Bridget Jones Diary is the first film by the director Sharon Maguire who found just a perfect fine line between comedy and touching romance.
Based on the novel by Helen Fielding, the screenplay (written by Four Weddings and a Funeral scribe Richard Curtis) successfully adapts the book into an easily-manageable 90 minute chunk while retaining much of the humour and remaining faithful to the tone.
As in the book, Bridget(Renee Zellweger)arrives at her parents home for her thirty second birthday determined to take control of her life, which means less smoking, less drinking, losing weight and finding the right man. Bridget has two candidates: handsome superior human rights barrister Mark Darcy(Colin Firth), who is at a holiday party against his will, in a bad mood and who is overheard by Bridget describing her as a “verbally incontinent spinster” and the fun loving and sexy Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant)who is Bridget's boss with whom she exchanges e-mails.Not surprisingly, she goes for Daniel, while Darcy acts emotionally constipated. After few weeks of having great fun with Daniel an unpredictable thing happen. Bridget finds out that Daniel was cheating on her with his New York colleague. She quits her job and goes work for a TV news channel, where by coincidence she meets Mark and thanks to him she gets an interview and become well known. Then, just when her interest in Mark begins to emerge Mark hooks up with his colleague lawyer Natasha (Embeth Davidtz), who is determined to marry him. At this point Bridget finds out that Daniel was also lying about Mark. Mark meets Daniel and we witness a fight on the street.
Visually, the film strings together one funny scene after another, such as when Bridget goes in costume to a party where she thought the theme was “Tarts and Vicars”,or when she gets a job in a TV and slides down the fire pole,or when she can't decide if to wear sexy G-string or tummy-crunching big knickers.
However, casting Renee Zellweger who is Mexican was a very risky move when compared with dependable British actors like Hugh Grant who we could see in “Notting Hill”and “Four Weddings and a Funeral” or Colin Firth from “Pride and Prejudice” but I must say that it definitely paid off.
To sum up,Bridget Jones Diary is a great result of everything fans could have hoped for. From my point of view this film is definitely worth to seeing and I highly recommend it.
