When we talk about sport we should distinguish between sport and games. Sport includes all kinds of physical activities in which people or teams play against each other and try to win, e.g. swimming, horse racing, climbing... Games are usually played between two people or two teams. A game is played according to a set of rules and a referee or umpire makes sure the players obey the rules a decises who has won. The most popular games are football, basketball, baseball ice hockey, tennis and golf.

If you are keen on sport, „you do sport“(BrE) or „play a sport“(AmE). People who are fond of sport and do sport regularly are sportsmen or sportswomen. You may do sport as an amateur or a professional. Amateurs are people who love physical activity and play sport to be fit and healthy. For them, doing sport is relaxing and make them happy and feel good.

On the other hand, sport is a job for many sportsmen. Many sportsmen claim that doing their sport has made them self-confident and able to manage life better. If you can become a top athlete, you have to start young and be prepared to work hard. You should train several times a day and have a healthy lifestyle. If you do all this, then maybe you will become a top sportsman and earn a lot of money. Famous sportsmen are usually popular with people and are loved and admired by sports fans.

There is another group of people involved in sport – the fans. The fans are people who love watching sporting events, either on TV or at the stadium. At the stadium they carry their national or team flag and sing songs to support their team.

The most popular game in the world is football and its fans are really emotional people. If a team loses a match, its fans sometimes start shouting and whistling at the opponents. English football fans, called „rowdies“, are a good example of such dangerous behaviour at football matches. Fortunately, most fans thoughts are far from the idea of fighting the other side's fans.
