Fiji

BIOSPHERE

Biosphere of Fiji is very different from the Slovak one because of position and climate. Because Republic of the Fiji in fact consist of a lot of small islands spread in Oceanic. It has also different conditions for organisms such as tropical climate, more rainfall compared to the landlocked Slovakia which is drier and has temperate climate. The biggest islands such as Viti Levu and Vanua Levu have lavish vegetation but the smaller islands (islets) made of limestone have poorer vegetation whereas almost whole area of Slovakia is covered by different types of vegetation depended on altitude, temperature, type of soil and so on. Both Slovakia and Fiji are similar in the total forest area which is very big (above fifty percent). There are mostly tropical forests where grow a lot of coconut palms in Fiji whereas Slovakia have coniferous fir and deciduous oak and beech forests. They lie between lower and upper forest limit above which are pastures and mountain meadows compared to Fiji’s islands where tropical forests are on wet windward side and dry leeward side is mainly treeless.

Biodiversity of Fiji isn’t as big as it is in Slovakia (there are only about 164 species) but on the other hand up to 50% of plants are endemic, which means they exist in no other country. On Fiji there are only a few species of freshwater fish like in Slovakia (trout, pike or carp) whereas rich presence of many sea fish near extensive coral reef.

One of the differences is also that in Slovakia there is a large number of mammals, amphibians and reptiles such as brown bear, lynx, wolf, frogs, salamanders whereas only a few species of small monkeys, iguanas and snakes living in Fiji.
