About internet history

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen.

Introducing yourself:

Since we haven’t all met before, so I’d better introduce myself. My name is Andrea M. I hope you’ll excuse my English. I’m a little out of practice.

Preparing the audience:
I’m going to be talking about the internet. I’ll start with history of internet and then move on to how to get connected. Finally, I’m going to tell you what are the advantages and disadvantages of being on-line.
I think, if you don’t mind we’ll leave questions to the end.

Delivering the message:
Firstly, I’ll start with a brief (stručný) history of internet. Internet was developed (vynájdený) out of originally American military defense program (americký vojenský program na obranu) during the cold war between Russia and U.S. The idea was to develop a network of computers that would be able to coexist independently (nezávisle). This independence was crucial (rozhodujúca), because if, let’s say (povedzme) New York was attacked (napadnutý) and nuked (zbombardovaný atómovou bombou) then the rest of the computer network would still be functional and U.S. would still be able to render (vykonať) a counter-attack (protiútok). Thus (takto) a set of rules of network communication had to be created that would ensure (zaistiť) this. This was called a TCP/IP protocol and was invented in 1973. I must emphasize (zdôrazniť) that the whole internet is based (založený) upon this.

Now let’s get to my next point. What do you need to be able to connect to the internet? Connecting (pripojenie) to the internet is rather (dosť) simple nowadays. All you need is a personal computer and a so-called internet service provider (poskytovateľ internetvého priojenia). Internet service provider is someone who you sign a contract with and who gets your computer connected to the internet. There are many internet service providers in Slovakia. Their services differ (líšiť sa) in the speed of connection the amount of data that you can transmit over the internet and time the you can spend connected. All the services differ in prices too, of course.

OK, and now I would like to tell you about the advantages and disadvantages of the internet. The good things about the internet are that it is probably the biggest source (zdroj) of information. You can read about almost everything on the internet, including (vrátane) today’s newspaper, weather forecast (predpoveď počasia) all over the world, the prices of shares of Stock Exchange (ceny cenných papierov), what’s on the TV today, when is Bon Jovi going to give concert (koncertovať) in Slovakia, the list goes on and on… You can also chat with people form all over the world, you can even (dokonca) see them, if they are using an online camera. You can also order (objednať) pizza, buy books, watch movie-trailers (filmová upútavka). The internet has almost limitless (neobmedzený) potential in spreading (šírenie) all kinds of information.

This brings me to my next point and that are the disadvantages of the internet. For example little children can access (pristupovať) such kind of information that is not suitable (vhodný) for them. There are some people, who become even possessed (posadnutý) by the internet, they don’t care spending hours in front of the computer. This can have negative effect on their physical and mental health.
Finally I would like to say that the internet is great invent (vynález) of the modern age we live which has its positive but also negative impacts (dopady, následky).
Winding-up (zakončenie):
That’s all I have to say for the moment. Thank you for listening and if there are any questions now, I’ll be happy to answer them.
