British system of education

Full time of education is compulsory for all children between the ages of 5 and 16. State system of education there are also fee-paying independent schools. Almost all state schools are day schools which have classes from Monday to Friday. The year si divoded in to three terms of around 13 weeks each. The school day usually begins between 8-9 a.m. and ends around 4 p.m. The state school system is divided into four stages: pre-school and primary, secondary, further and higher education.

Pre-school and Primary Education:

Is provided by nursery and primary schools. Compulsory education begins at 5when children go to infant schools. Emphasis in this school is on learning, drawing, painting, musical activities. At 7 many children move to junior schools where the work is more systematic. Then there are also first schools which take pupils aged 5 to 8,9 or 10 and pupils within the 8-14 age range go to middle schools.

Secondary Education:

At the age of 11 pupils transfer from primary to secondary schools. Pupils usually go to Comprehensive schools. Comprehensive means all- inclusive. Children attend Grammar school, too which they enter at the age of 11. Children attend Secondary school which provide a moral general education up to the age of 16.

Further Education:

Further education is provided both by the top two classes of a comprehensive and grammar school. Six- form colleges are schools which provide academic and non-academic education., while tertiary colleges offer a range of full-time and part- time vocational courses as well as more academic ones.

School Curriculum:

The Government has introduced the National Curriculum in state schools. The National Curriculum defines four key stages and ten statutory subjects. The three core subjects are English, mathematics and science and there are seven other foundation subjects- information technology, history, geigraphy, music, art, physical education and a modern foreign language.
