Letters
The introduction – a person reading the introduction should have a basic overview of what the author is going to write about. Topic, general idea. Its usually first paragraph.
The main body – more than one paragraph, because each new idea or point should be developed properly. A person should be able to read the first sentence of each paragraph of the main body of the text and be able to see author’s points clearly.
The conclusion – author’s opinion. A person reading the conclusion should know exactly what was written about and the author’s opinion on the subject.
Formal letters can be letters of complain (sťažnosť), recommendation (odporúčanie), application (žiadosť, prihláška), request (žiadosť), thanks. This letters use formal language we have to know what the exact problem is, who is being addressed and what author expecting from that person.
1. The author’s address is in the top right-hand corner
a) no name b) Slovak addresses should be left
2. The date
a) below the writer’s address, skipping one line b) written in full – May, July
3. The recipient’s address
a) if the person’s function is known, include it
4. greeting
a) if we don’t know the name – Dear Sir, Madam, Dear Sirs, Dear Sir/Madam, Dear Sir or Madame b) if we know the name, address them personally – Mr. Smith, Mrs. Smith c) there should be a comma after the greeting
5. The introduction – includes opening remarks and the specific reason for writing
6. The main body
a) develops the reason for writing in various related points b) each point has its own paragraph
7. The conclusion
a) closing remarks b) include some polite expressions (in present simple only) - I look forward to meeting you/hearing from you soon - Thank you for your time and consideration
8. Ending
a) if recipient’s name is known, use Yours sincerely b) if it is not known, use Your faithfully c) there should be a comma after the ending 9. author’s signature above (nad) the author’s printed name is full
Informal letters are usually written to friends, family members or someone we know well. They are full of everyday common expressions and vocabulary, idioms (fraza), questions and exclamations ( Guess what!( Hadaj co), Thanks a lot). Sentences are usually shorter, more personal and use simple linking devices – but, and, because. Short form is normal. Informal letters are in first person.
