John Grisham

I have just been reading the book called Client and I am really excited about it. It was written by well-known author of many bestsellers John Grisham in 1993. There was also a film based on this book and was in TV few weeks ago. This is the story of eleven-year-old Mark Sway, who witnesses the suicide of a New Orleans attorney. Just before he dies, the lawyer tells Mark a secret about the recent murder of a Louisiana Senator, whose accused killer, Mafia thug Barry Muldanno, is about to go to trial.

And the story begins…

The main characters are Marc Sway – young smart boy taking care of his little brother Ricky and his mother, Diane Sway – poor but warm-hearted woman, who is worried about her sons, Reggie Love – friendly lawyer, who tries to help Sways. Sways are poor family and live in trailer park without father. Diane is divorced because her husband was very violent and often beat them. They live in very poor conditions and Diane must work very hard to bring some money home. One day Mark and Ricky go to the wood to smoke a cigarette stolen from their mother. They try to hide behind bushes and suddenly they see a big black car, where the man inside wants to commit suicide. They know that because the man has put water hose into the exhaust pipe and the other end through a hole in the car window. Mark creeps twice to take the hose out of it. Suddenly the man, Romey Clifford comes out of the car and pulls Mark violently into it to die with him. The lawyer tells Mark a secret that his client Barry the Blade has killed the US Senator and has hidden the body in Romey's garage.

Ricky gets very ill and is brought to the hospital, Diane stays with him. The police find out that Mark was with Romey and pressure Mark to tell them Romey's last words. But Mark is afraid of Mafia spying on him so he hires a lawyer Reggie Love. Mafia insist on Mark not telling anything, they even have had the Sways house completely exploded. Diane loses her work and becomes miserable. It is getting worse and worse, so they have to think of a plan. Mark is taken to the juvenile jail by the police, where they want to get information from him. He refuses to tell anything. Mark comes with a crazy plan. He simulates a traumatic shock like Ricky had, so he has to be taken to the hospital. The plan was that Reggie “kidnaps” the boy from there and right after that they are quickly going to Romey's house to look for the body of the Senator. The body was there. They have to leave instantly, Reggie gives them some money and they disappear. The book provides very fascinating and spine-chilling story with lots of thrill. It is really hard to put down. I really like it like almost all Grisham's books because I like books containing mystery, detective plot and thrill all connected into one story. I can recommend it to everyone. It is really worth reading. It will certainly engulf you, like it did me.
