My town – Humenne, the second largest town of historic Zemplin, lies 175 m above sea level somewere in the heart of Europe. It is situated in the east of Slovakia and it lies on the river Laborec. The first written document concerning Humenne dates back to 1332. The historic of Humenne is connected with an aristocratic family of the Drugeths from Italy. The Drugeths came to change Humenne into the center of one of the largest feudal dominions in Slovakia. The Andrassys started to influence the history of Humenne in the 19 century and that period was characterized by economic growth.
With the first train in Humenne in 1871 started also the development of trade and woodcutting. The construction of a plant for the production of textile polyamide fibres, Chemlon, started the growth of Humenne in the 20century. Humenne was gradually becoming a center of chemical engerindering industries. At present Humenne is a district town with over 35 thousand people. Its life is rich in cultural and sport events. The most significant town monument is the renaissance Manor house, where the museum is now and gothic church. Near the Manor house there is an old park with an Open-air museum of folk architecture. There are 5 housing estates in Humenne and lot of: shops, schools, churches, restaurants, banks, and a cinema, a library, ice ring, a swimming pool, a house of culture and many other important old and new buildings.
