London originated as the Roman settlement of Londinium, which grew around the bridge over the River Thames.

London has now 7 mil. inhabitants of whose are 1.2 mil. foreigners. It’s total area is over 4 000 square kilometers and it’s divided into two cities., Londostn and Weminster and 28 boroughs.

The City is very small place with it’s total area of 2 and half square kilometers with about 10 000 permanent inhabitants. The City is one of the world’s leading financial centers and we can find here all sort of banks, financial institutions and head -offices of international companies. The best known building of this place is The Bank of England, which is also called The Old Lady of Threadneedle Street and it issues money. The other is Lloyds’ insurance building, all the ships in the world are insured here. The Stock Exchange and Royal Exchange are also situated here. This part of London is know for not meeting the typical Englishmen because now it’s full of new technologies.

But the City is not only the modern center, here are sides too, for example London Wall, Lombard Street, Moorgate and Bishopsgate. Here’s the site of the oldest London Bridge, which was built in 1971 and replaced the one, which is now in Arizona. In 1666 there was a Great Fire and in 1665 Great Plague, these two catastrophes destroyed The City. The Great Fire began in a baker’s shop in Pudding Lane and continued 4 days. After the fire, the City was rebuilt and the buildings were designed by Christopher Wren, for ex. Monument of Great Fire, it’s a column, which is 65 meters high.

Saint Paul’s cathedral is situated on the top of Ludgate Hill and it dominated the City with it’s huge dome. It occupies the place where a temple dedicated to Diana stood. The temple was rebuilt by Ethelbert, the king of Kent, to Christian Church, it happened in 17th century, this church was destroyed after the Norman Conquest. Norman’s built on this place Old Saint Paul’s Cathedral, which was destroyed during the Great Fire.

Christopher Wren was asked to rebuilt this building, but it was too broke, so it was decided to built new cathedral.

The cathedral was finished after 35 years, and it’s famous for it’s dome. it consists of large outer and smaller inner dome. The cross is 365 feet above the ground.
