Great Britain is situated in the British Isles. It consists of three parts : England, Wales and Scotland. The British Isles are situated in the north-east of the Atlantic Ocean. From Europe they are divided by the English Channel.

England occupies the middle and southern part of the British Isles. The Isle of Weight and the Scilly Isles lie near the south coast. Wales is situated on a peninsula of the same name along the west coast of British Isles.

The sea surrounding the land brings a lot of advantages to the country. One of them is fishing and transportation.
The most mountainous area of Great Britain is Scotland. The highest British mountain is Ben Nevis – it measures 1343 m.



The rivers are very important as sources of energy. Among the most important rivers is the Thames, which flows into the North Sea. Its length is 336 km. It is navigable as far as the capital of Great Britain – London. The longest river is the Severn. Its length is 338 km. Other important rivers include the Trent, the Tay and the Tweed.

The greatest number of lakes can be found in Northern Scotland. From the Scottish lakes the most famous are Loch Lomond and Loch Ness. The lakes are not important for freight transport but they are a big tourist attraction.



There are many branches of industry. The most advanced are chemical, textile and aviation industries.



From 1215 is in Great Britain a constitutional monarchy. Parliamentary democracy is practised there. There are Legislative Power, Executive Power and Judicial Power. Legislative Power consists of Parliament and House of Commons and House of Lords. Prime Minister has a long arm. (big, great power). The Prime Minister selects the other ministers. The Common Law is practised there.



England consist of 46 Counties, Scotland of 33 Counties and Wales of 13 Counties. From the History is interesting The War of Roses in 1455 and The Industrial Revolution in 17 century.
