The Eiffel Tower

It’ s a famous metal tower which is situated in the centre of Paris. But it’s not just a high tower that was used for telegraphy few years ago. The Eiffel tower was the symbol of modernity and the Industrial revolution.
History: It was built by Gustave Eiffel for the International Exhibition of Paris of 1889 and commemorated the centenary of the French Revolution. However, it wasn’t accepted by all. Artists like Maupassant, Emile Zola, Charles Garnier (architect of the Opéra Garnier), and Dumas the Younger protested. It was a ,,horrible and useless” building for them. They weren’t succesful, though. The Eiffel Tower became the youngest attraction of Paris at that time and 2 millions of people came to Paris to visit the tower. In 1909 The tower was almost torn down but was saved because of its antenna - used for telegraphy at that time.

Interesting informations: It was the world highest building until 1931 when The Empire State Building in New York was built.
It has to be repainted every 5 years. It’ s made of 10,000 tons of metal. There are 9 elevators in the tower. It has 2 floors and a top level. There are lots of snack bars, ice cream stands, souvenir shops, "Le Jules Verne" Restaurant. and one post office. Gustave Eiffel had designed the Statue of Liberty in New York before the Eiffel tower.
