he capital Bratislava is situated in the heart of Europe and in the south – western part of Slovakia. To the south it borders with Hungary, to the west with Austria. The city is covering an area of 367,9 km2 on both banks of the Danube river and at the roots of the Small Carpathians.
Bratislava is a city with a long history and proud of several historic milestones. The first nations, leaving traces in this region, were the Celts, Germans and Romans. Then the Avars and Slavs arrived. The ancestors of today s population settled in the 5th. and 6th. century. The town was from 1563 – 1830 the seat of the Hungarian diet and the town of coronation. Ten Hungarian kings and eight of their wives and the Hungarian queen – Maria Theresia were crowned in Bratislava. In this era the town visited of such important people like Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven and others. The Modern history is connected mainly with the process of the Slovak nation, which led to come into being of the Slovak Republic. Bratislava is the modern city and is full of jewels of architecture. There are many historical and cultural contributes. There is the seat of the president of the Republic, diplomatic representations and the highest state, political, economical, cultural institutions, with national activities. The dynamic development of Bratislava is inviting the whole world.
The most important monument is the Bratislava Castle.
This majestic castle stands on the rock, which forms part of the Small Carpathians mountains above the Danube river. Castle forms an outstanding feature of the capital town. The massive building with four corner towers stands in a strategic place which was inhibited during Celtic times and in the time of Greater Moravia. After the Slavs arrival there did incept a new fortification.
