Travelling

Has a long tradition. In the past, people traveled mainly on foot, eventually by boats or on horses. Later they used steam trains, steam cars or steamboats, which were something new for them. The first people to travel round the world went by sea. An American made the first solo circumnavigation at the end of the 19th century. The first non-stop flight round the world took 94 hours. People travelled round the world also on bicycles, on sledges, in lorries or in submarines. Nowadays travelling is very popular, common and necessary. People have many reasons for travelling. Some people travel to school, on business, for pleasure, for political or cultural reasons. In my opinion, the most important is tourism. For most people it’s a great hobby. Every summer you can see thousands of people waiting at airports, at bus or railway stations. People want to see the most beautiful sights of the world’s famous metropolises or other historical monuments.

When you go on holiday to foreign country, you should travel through a travel agency, because it is much safer and the agency makes a reservation and another duties for you. Therefore, you would have fewer problems. When you have an accident abroad, insurance is very important too. However, it also has disadvantages. Nowadays a lot of travel agencies exist which try to sell as many of their trips as they can. In addition, sometimes when they want to make a good business they do not tell us whole truth about the quality of services provided and we discover it just after payment or on our destinations.Travelling by plane is the fastest, the safest and the most expensive way. It is convenient, especially over long distances. You can also relax or sleep there and you can see the world from heights. If you want to fly, you have to book a seat on plane and you can choose from first class called also business class or second class called economy class. A price of a fly-ticket is according to a class, which you choose. On the day of your departure, you have to check-in, go through passport control and a security check. Your luggage is checked and then you wait to board your plane at a departure gate. During the flight, you are offered some refreshments. So-called air-business isn’t in Slovakia very developed, but in bigger countries it’s a great business, because in one country several of air companies exists. Every air company has a strong competition, so they try to obtain customers with various services and sales.

Many people are afraid of travelling by air, so they prefer travelling by land. If you travel by land, you should consider one of these: going on foot, riding a bike or motorcycle, going by car, bus, tram, underground or train. They all have advantages and disadvantages. Walking takes a long time, but it’s definitely the cheapest and the healthiest way. I think that tram is the most popular travelling in our city. Main advantage is that that tram never waits in a traffic jam, but trams have traffic lights too. Very important is that trams don’t pollute nature. However, trams are very slow. If you travel by underground, you can’t get wet, you don’t wait in the traffic jam and it’s very fast. If you compare travelling by underground or tram to travelling by bus, you will find that buses have many disadvantages. For example, buses are very often overcrowded; drivers never give the bus right of way. Buses, included with cars have to wait in a traffic jam and they pollute nature. Something different is travelling by bus with travel agencies. It’s more comfortable, you can usually get a drink and there is a video to watch during the journey. We know also yellow buses, which are typical for America. These buses are used for transporting children to their schools. Moreover, London is famous for its red busses called double-deckers. Cars’ advantages are that you can go anywhere you want, so you can travel door to door and you have privacy in it. Everywhere you will find motorways (highways) with car parks, petrol stations and restaurants or motels, in which you can have a rest. You must have a driving licence and observe rules and laws, it’s very important.

Travelling by train was quite common in the past, but with the development of the car industry it became partly neglected. Today it is becoming more popular because it offers a combination of speed, comfort and pleasure. Moreover, train tickets are not very expensive and sitting at the window and watching the beautiful countryside during the day is something you will remember. If you travel at night, you can sleep in a sleeper and if you are hungry, you may have a meal in a dining car.
On the other hand, you can travel also by ship. When you travel by small boat, you can get seasick easily, but nowadays many medicines exist which help you with travel sickness. Moreover, modern ships have made travelling by sea more comfortable. On these ships, there are swimming pools, bars, restaurant, social rooms and much more. Some people spend the whole holiday on the ship, but it’s very expensive. Journey preparation can be a problem too, because for many people it’s a very stressful situation. Some people don’t know how to pack only important things. Mainly women pack almost all from their wardrobe and then they miss really important things, which didn’t fit in their luggage. I forget my comb and tooth paste very often. I like to travel abroad very much, especially to Greece, because I like their culture, national habits and the people are very friendly. Furthermore, the nature and the sea are very beautiful. We are used to visit Greece annually, on every summer holiday. I think that travelling in the future will be less detrimental for nature, because people have tried to find a resolution of this problem. Moreover, people are able to get to places which are not available today. What I mean is for example travelling to space. I believe that people won’t live only on the Earth and I hope that we will travel to a different galaxy too. It will be very exciting and useful for science, but very dangerous too. Maybe it’s a pity that we won’t see it...
