Over to you
Wake up to what you can do for the environment
Introduction
We chose this topic, because we are interested in our and global environment. The environment is highly polluted all around the world, so we asked 50 people, mostly our schoolmates, whether they try to improve this situation or they pollute it more.
Lets revise what environmental problems is our planet Earth faced with. There are many of them, but the biggest are:
Green house effect or global warming is process of gradual warming, heating of Earth. If we does not stop it the oceanic sheets will be melted, the sea level will be increased and all coastal countries will be flooded. We should invent how to stop green house effect.
The next menace for our planet is enlarging of ozone hole. Ozone layer is layer of gases (mostly O3 - ozone) high above the Earth's surface, which helps to protect the Earth from the dangerous sun's ultraviolet rays. Since freons had been invented and used the ozone layer has been thickening (damaging).
Acid rain is being caused by the by-products of many factories. When sulphur trioxide reacts with water the weak sulphuric acid is formed (SO3 + H2O = H2SO4). Acid rains are destroying and harming nature - trees are suffering and being unable to produce oxygen, it destroys natural habitat of animals and so on.
The biggest human factor is deforestation. It is process of cutting many trees in forests and rainforests. We know that trees are producing oxygen which is absolutely necessary (crucial) for living creatures being.
Questions
We have asked four YES/NO questions:
1. Do you often throw rubbish away in the streets?
Yes 17
No 33
We think that 17 people from total of 50 is too much. We are not amazed that streets are dirty. Inhabitants of Slovak Republic are disloyal to their county. They are not realised what can it cause. In well-developed countries they have special workers whose work is to clean polluted streets. The difference between well-developed and our country is that they have much more of these workers than in Slovak Republic.
2. Do you gather used paper in order to get it recycled?
Yes 41
No 9
The most of our classmates and their families gather paper in order to help our environment but still a lot of paper is not getting recycled. Wasting of paper destroys our forests by process called deforestation. Many people gather paper because of money or toilet paper, they get from it as a refund, or there are some volunteers who do this to safe our forests. This collection is one the best developed in our county other are not as much developed as this.
3. Do you do many things (activities) to improve situation of the environment?
Yes 4
No 46
We found out that many people are for improving situation of environment but only few of them are joining activities against pollution. The most of people maximally they persuade others not to pollute. Our school organisation is called Bakelita which separates and collects plastic bottles and paper. The most famous international organisation is Green peace.
4. Do you separate rubbish?
Yes 19
No 31
People mostly answered that they do not separate rubbish. In our opinion it is caused by few factors. First, the most important one, is that they do not have opportunity to separate it, what is a pity. The second is that they are not interested in the future of Earth, they often say that they would live there only couple of years.
The open questions:
1. Do you think that Slovak Republic is
A/ highly polluted 31
B/ as polluted as other 13
C/ mildly polluted 8
Most of asked people answered that Slovak Republic is highly polluted. We approve with their opinions. But we do not understand answer that Slovakia is only mildly polluted. For example our rivers as Dunaj or Váh are today much more higher polluted than before 50 years. It is mostly caused by new factories which releases harmful substance.
2. What is the biggest environmental problem all over the Earth?
A/ Green house effect (global warming) 21
B/ Ozone hole 10
C/ Acid rain 9
D/ Industry 6
E/ Deforestation 4
Lots of people are unaware of effects of Global warming. However it will flood coastal countries furthermore it will change global climate and it will be much more warmer than it is nowadays so humans will be unable to live on Earth. Other menaces are not as dangerous as this.
3. What do you do to improve situation of environmental?
A/ Nothing 12
B/ Collecting paper 29
C/ Using environmental friendly products 6
D/ Joining activities against pollution 3
People are disloyal to environment. The easiest thing to do is to do nothing as it was said by twelve respondents. But fortunately 29 respondents are quite realised so at least they gather paper. Only six respondents said that they use environmental friendly products. Maybe they did not know that 95% of toilet papers are environmental friendly.
4. How would you evaluate the pollution of water in the world?
A/ Extremely polluted 12
B/ Highly polluted 28
C/ Mildly polluted 6
D/ Acceptable 4
E/ Not polluted 0
Harmful substances are getting to water from canalisation and factories. Another polluters are tankers, oil rigs whose released crude oil destroys life in water. Many people know that water is highly polluted
5. How would you evaluate the pollution of air in the world?
A/ Extremely polluted 5
B/ Highly polluted 23
C/ Mildly polluted 16
D/ Acceptable 6
E/ Not polluted 0
Pollution of air is very similar to pollution of water but not exactly the same. With air it is a little bit worse.
6. What do you think - which sex is more prosecuted for dropping litter?
Asked sex
Man Woman
Blamed Sex Men 1418
Women 50
50/5067
Total:2525
The both sex think that men are more prosecuted than women for throwing rubbish away in the streets. Surely they guessed. The fact is that they were right, more me n are prosecuted (Streetwise page 56). It is obvious that women are feminist because they did not blame any woman (only guessing?).
Conclusion:
Lets evaluate this survey completely. Almost everybody is not interested in the fact that environment is getting worse. They are also disloyal to situation in their country. People should be more informed about environmental problems, not to be unaware. It is good when they at least gather/collect paper to get it recycled.
Humans should follow motto: "If someone cannot appreciate his/her planet he/she does not deserve to live there."
This project was for us very interesting and instructive, we have really enjoyed working on this project, because it thought us how to organise work in group of two-couple and cope with problems.
Ahojte vsetci! Chcem vam len povedat ze za tuto rocnikovu pracu som dostal suverennu 1, takze nech sa paci...
