Canada - geography, demography
Canada is located in northern part of North America, bordering the North Alantic Ocean and North Pacific Ocean. It is the second largest country in the world ,it covers 9 976 140 sq km. Border country is only USA , on the south states: Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsilvania, New York, Vermont ,Concord ,Maine, and on the north Alaska.
The western part of Canada is mountanious (Cordilleras). The highest point is Mount Logan (5959m), which is situated near Alaska border.The principal agricultural area is between Cordilleras and lowlands on the east. In the northern part of Canada there is big Hudson Bay and many islands, e.g.:Victoria Island, Baffin island, Banks island. On the east you can find large Labrador peninsula.
Rivers and lakes covers 755 170 sq km of area. The main rivers are: the Mackenzie, flowing from the Great Slave Lake to the north, the St. Lawrence , which flows into the Atlantic , and the Fraser River. Canada owns many lakes too. The largest are: the Great Slave Lake and the Great Bear Lake on the north and the lake Winnipeg in the province of Manitoba. And also northern part of Great Lakes belongs to Canada (except Lake Michigan).
In Canada you can find also famoust, 55m high Niagara Falls on river Niagara. The river is conecting Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. Falls are making natural border with USA.There are two falls: the smaller is American, and the bigger, which is called horseshoe, belongs to Canada.This place is well known by plenty of turists.
Climate is various from temperate on the south to arctic in the north. But most of inhabited part of Canada has continental climate (warm sommers, cold winters), on the Pacific coast is the climate milder.
Canada has many natural resources: wood, potash asbestos, uranium, non-ferrous metals, gold, silver, platinum, natural gas.
One of Canda´s problem is soiled nature. Air pollution and acid rain are affecting lakes (especialy Great Lakes) and forests , also ocean waters are becoming contamined. 50% of acid rain are made by USA industry.
Demography and religion in Canada
Despite of Canada is the second largest country, there live only about 31 milion people, on one sq km lives in average 2,6 person, but nearly 90% of population is concentrated within 160 km of USA/ Canada border.
The northern “neverending forests“ are mostly uninhabited, there are only isolated settlements, trading stations and settlements of Indians and Eskimos (Inuit).They are only fishig and hunting. In whole Canada are about 350 000 Indians and 30 000 Inuits.
Canada consist of 10 provinces and 2 territories. The most inhabited are central provinces: Ontario and Quebec. In Ontario live one third of whole Canadian population. On Atlantic seaboard are provinces Nova Scotia, New Brundsvick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland. The Praire Provinces are made up of Manitoba , Saskatchewan and Alberta. British Columbia covers Pacific seaboard and almost the whole of the Western Mountain system and the islands along the coast. The two territories are Yukon and the North-west Territories.
Capital town of Canada is Ottawa. Ottawa is situated in province Ontario. But the biggest city is Toronto. It is capital town of Ontario, now it has populaton about 5 million. Canada has two official languages: English and French. Majority of Canadians speak at home English ( 60%), 23% speaks French, and 17% other. Most of French speaking descendants live in province Quebec. In Canada lives a lot of forein inhabitants: European 15%, American 2%, and others , mostly Asian ,African, Arabian, Hispanic.Migration rate is 6,2migrant / 1000 population. Also many Slovaks emigrated there.
Majority of Canadians are Roman Catholics (42%), then Protestants (40%) and other (18%), e.g.: moslims, hinduists...
