The Old Town, The New Town and Josefov are on the eastern bank of the Vltava and on the western bank there are The Little Quarter and Hradčany, which surround Prague Castle.
Prague castle, probably the city’s best known sight, is over thousand years old. It was founded in the 9th century, then rebuilt and extended many times. It was residence of Czech kings and now is it the residence of Czech president. On the castle there is St.Vitus Cathedral. It was built in gothic style. In the cathedral are kept the bohemian crown jewels. Other interesting parts of Prague Castle include the Old Royal Palace with its huge Vladislav Hall, still used for official ceremonies, the basilica of St.George, a fine Romanesque church, and the Golden Lane.
Beneath Prague Castle lies the Little Quarter, a picturesque district Prague with Baroque palaces and gardens built in the 17th and 18th centuries by the aristocracy. The famous building in the Little Quarter there is St.Nicholas Church, which is in baroque style by brothers Dienzenhofer built. The little quarter is connected to the city centre by the famous Charles Bridge. Charles Bridge is built in Gothic style, but the statues are made in Baroque style. Across the river are other two historical sectors, the Old Town, the New town and the others modern parts in the city. The Old Town Square is after the castle the most popular place in town. The main attraction is astronomical clock in the Old Town Hall. In the old town there are two big churches – the Gotchic Týn Church and the Barocque St.Nicholas Church. From the Old Town Square it isn’t so far to the centre of modern part of the city-Wenceslas Square. On the top part of the square there are a statue of St. Wenceslas and the National Museum. This Square represents the everyday life of the Czech capital.
Contemporary Prague is the political, administrative, financial and commercial centr of the Czech Republic. It is also an industrial city, producing goods ranging from machinery to foodstuffs.
