LEVOČA is one of the best-preserved mediaval towns in Europe. Its square is bordered by
500 houses from the 16th to 17th centuries. The renaissance town hall (1550),
today the Spiš muzeum, stands in the middle of the square togehter
with the church of St. Jacob (1508 – 1517) with its world famous altar by Master Pavol.
The altar of Master Pavol in the Church of St. Jacob is the largest gothic altar in the world. It´s 18, 62 m high. Apart form this, there are further works of this master, as well as artefacts from the late gothic, renaissance and baroque periods.
BARDEJOV received a Europan prize, the Golden Medal (1986), for the preservation of its artistic heritage. Dominating the square, which is bordered by gothic and renaissance houses, are the gothic-renaissance town hall and gothic church of St. Giles (dating from the beginning of the 15th century) with its unique collection of 11 gothic side altars (1460 – 1520).
SPIŠ CASTLE – the most monumetnal architectural site in Slovakia and the largest castle in central Europe, together with Spišská kapitula and Žehra make up a unique site, with an entry in the UNESCO Directory of World Cultural and Antural Heritage. The ruins of the castle are situated in the district of Spišská Nová, above Spišské podhradie. There are expositions of history of the colonization of the castle hill, of middle age judiciary and art.
